Whether it is printing paper, copy paper, paper stock,
newspaper, or any other the plethora of paper products that are produced today,
GSM, or grams per square meter , is the standard measurement of paper’s
density.
The formula
I use to calculate the paper’s density is as follows
GSM = The area of the paper (calculated in Meters
Squared or M2)
The mass of
the paper (calculated in Grams or G)
I
personally come from a scientific background and precision is something I
value. So I generally use 3 different measurements.
First, I use the area of one single card divided by the mass
of one single card.
GSM = Area of 1 card
Mass
of 1 card
Second, I use 10 times the area of one single card divided
by the mass of 10 cards
GSM =
Area of 1 card x 10
Mass
of 10 cards
Finally I use the 52 times the area of one single card
divided by the mass of the deck (52 cards)
GSM = Area
of 1 card x 52
Mass
of 52 Cards
Finally, the three results are averaged and the results
posted on each deck review’s specs section.
If I am incorrect in my methods, feel free to comment and let me know.
Thanks and enjoy!
